OYO SCHOOL ABDUCTIONS: A NATIONAL EMERGENCY THAT DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY AND ACTION

The recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State is a painful reminder that insecurity remains one of the greatest threats to Nigeria’s development.

The disturbing abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has once again brought the issue of insecurity in and around educational institutions to the forefront of national discourse. The incident has sparked public condemnation and collective concern, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) staging protests and taking industrial action to demand the safe return of their colleagues and students, as well as stronger measures to protect schools across the country.

At Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development (AGEACCOD), we strongly condemn this criminal act and express our deepest solidarity with the affected children, teachers, families, and communities. Schools are meant to be places of learning, hope, and opportunity—not theatres of fear and violence.

The kidnapping of children and educators is not merely a security issue; it is a direct attack on the fundamental right to education and the future of our nation. When parents become afraid to send their children to school, when teachers must choose between their profession and their safety, and when communities lose confidence in the ability of institutions to protect them, the consequences extend far beyond the immediate victims.

The situation in Oyo State raises important questions about the protection of schools and vulnerable communities. While security agencies continue their efforts to secure the release of those abducted, Nigerians deserve to know what preventive measures were in place, what intelligence existed before the attacks, and what lessons are being learned to prevent future occurrences. Accountability is not about assigning blame alone; it is about ensuring that institutions function effectively and that public trust is strengthened through transparency and responsiveness.

We commend the courage and resilience of teachers, school administrators, parents, community leaders, and security personnel who continue to stand firm in the face of this unfortunate situation. We also acknowledge the actions taken by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in drawing national attention to the plight of the abducted victims and advocating for improved safety measures within the educational sector.

As an organization committed to good governance, ethics, and sustainable development, AGEACCOD calls on:

1. The Federal and Oyo State Governments to intensify efforts toward the immediate and safe release of all abducted pupils, students, and teachers.

2. Security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms around schools and vulnerable communities.

3. Policymakers to prioritize the implementation and enforcement of comprehensive school safety measures across the country.

4. Community leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens to collaborate in building local early-warning systems capable of identifying and reporting security threats before they escalate.

5. Relevant authorities to provide psychosocial support and rehabilitation services for victims and affected families upon their release.

Nigeria cannot afford to normalize the abduction of school children and educators. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in safety. Every teacher deserves to work without fear. Every community deserves the protection of a responsive and accountable security system.

The true measure of governance is not only how it responds to crises but how effectively it prevents them. As a nation, we must move beyond expressions of sympathy and commit ourselves to practical actions that safeguard lives, protect education, and restore public confidence.

The future of our children is too important to be left vulnerable to the forces of violence and lawlessness.

Advocacy for Good Ethics and Accountability for Development (AGEACCOD) remains committed to promoting responsible governance, accountability, human rights, and sustainable development for all Nigerians.
